Born in 1967, in Sieradz, Poland, Dariusz Klimczak is an independent journalist, painter and Grand Prix winner of the seventh Aphoristic Contest in Nowy Targ, Poland 2005.

Klimczak mainly works in square frames & black and white images but doesn’t shun colours. In his photomanipulative works he seeks mood, humour, and universal symbols that will make the viewer contemplate or laugh.

Niklas Lundberg: Illustration

Niklas Lundberg is a self-taught freelance illustrator based in Umeå, Sweden. Of his work, Lundberg says: “I am a creative guy doing creative things. The fascination of art and design has been something I always had since I was a kid. The passion grew stronger for each year and I knew pretty fast what I wanted to do. I love abstract art because it’s a medium that is more free and allows you to create concepts that are interesting and appealing to the eye.”

Sarolta Ban: Photo Manipulation 2011

A selection of recent work from DAF favourite Sarolta Ban (featured). Born in Budapest, Hungary in 1982, Ban was originally a jewellery designer before discovering digital photo manipulation. Using a Fuji S5600 Bridge Camera, Sarolta’s images can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days to complete, containing up to 100 layers.

“I like using ordinary elements and by combining them, I can give them various stories and personalities. I hope that the meanings of my pictures are never too limited, are open in some way so that each viewer can transform them into a personal aspect. “

David Whitlam: Painting

Born in 1977, UK artist David Whitlam showed an interest and talent for drawing at a young age. While studying graphic art at Leeds Metropolitan University, he developed a curiosity for surrealism and the workings of the unconscious.

Whitlam works in three mediums – pencil, oil paint, and Adobe Photoshop. His goal is to “tap into the desires and anxieties within the subconscious.” Whitlam does this by using a technique called automatic drawing working only from his imagination. With no planning, he allows his images to evolve into their own identities rather than attempting to capture reality. “By re-arranging these universal symbols, by dressing them in carnival masks and making them pose amidst absurdities , I create my own visions, whose meanings are often highly personal and esoteric, yet which somehow echo the aesthetic style of past cultures, and relate to more general themes within the collective subconscious”.

Whitlam is a member of the Vernon Mill Artists in Stockport – one of the largest studio-based art groups in the UK. His paintings have been exhibited in venues around Stockport and Manchester and have sold to collectors around the world. Martin Stranka: Photography

Martin Stranka is a young photographer living in Prague, Czech Republic. Stranka studied at Bank University in Prague and fell in love with photography about five years ago.

Entirely self-taught, Stranka uses a digital full-frame camera Canon 5D and Photoshop as a final touch for his ideas. He is influenced by the work of Robert and Shana Parke Harrison. “I am amazed by their unique way of how they can combine and show the connection between human and nature.”

“I thought I always wanted to express something like solitary or loneliness. But when I look back, I have to say I tend to express inner silence. We all live in rushed places and noisy environments and we cant stay in silence and talk to ourselves. It should be something like inner dialog. Connecting with nature.”

Georges Bousquet: Collage

More great work from illustrator and collage artist Georges Bousquet aka Casajordi. Bousquet is based in Perpignan, France near the Spanish border. He creates his collages by first sketching out his ideas on paper and then taking them into Photoshop. Each image has about 300 layers and takes approximately 15 hours to build.

Jim Kazanjian: Photoshop Composites

Portland based artist Jim Kazanjian received his MFA from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California in 1992 and his BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1990. He has worked professionally as a commercial CGI artist for the past 16 years in television and game production.

Influenced by writers such as H.P. Lovecraft, Algernon Blackwood, and J.K. Huysmans, Kazanjian is interested in the “narrative archetypes these authors utilized to de-familiarize the familiar.”

Kazanjian’s images are digitally manipulated composites made from photographs that he finds online. “The number of found images I work with in a piece can vary from 12 to 30. On the more complex pieces I’ve used upwards of 50. I generally sample sections from photographs I find interesting and use them as building blocks. I assemble these “blocks” together in Photoshop to create a nonexistent space that mimics a photograph. I do not use a camera at any stage in this process.”

“I am interested in a kind of “entropic” image, an image that has the capacity to de-familiarize itself. My current work is an attempt to unravel the photograph and play with established notions of time, space, and the understanding of what gives things context.”

Jan Oliehoek: Photo Manipulation

A little weird, a little creepy, a little beautiful. These are the photo manipulations of Jan Oliehoek. Based in Leiden, Netherlands, Oliehoek has a Masters degree in Biology, works as an IT specialist, for a biopharmaceutical company, and creates his surreal hybrids as a hobby.

“I try to create images that are both photorealistic and impossible at the same time. There are countless ways to accomplish this, and combining several animals into one hybrid is one of them. On top of that, I find that some animals just look amazing and beautiful. If on top of that they are then photographed by a really good photographer, I am already more than half way in creating a cool image without even having touched it yet.”

Maggie Taylor: Digital Collage

Some of today’s images may look familiar to you, especially if you’re a fan of the TV show “Ghost Whisperer” where they appear in the show’s intro. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Maggie Taylor has a BA in philosophy from Yale University and an MFA in photography from the University of Florida.

In 1996, after more than ten years as a still-life photographer, Taylor began creating her images digitally. Using ﬂatbed scanners and Adobe Photoshop, Taylor creates unique digital collages that “transport viewers to dreamlike worlds inhabited by everyday objects.” Primarily a ﬁne artist, Taylor also spends some of her time creating cover images for books and music CDs. Her commercial clients include Warner Brothers Music and Penguin Publishing.

Taylor’s work is featured in “Adobe Photoshop Master Class: Maggie Taylor’s Landscape of Dreams”, “Solutions Beginning with A” , and “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” by Lewis Carroll . Her images are in numerous public and private collections including Princeton University Art Museum, The Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University, Harn Museum of Art, University of Florida, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and The Museum of Photography, Seoul. She currently lives in Gainesville, Florida.
