Hi Steve,
It's thought that Bacon's father was a descendant of Sir Nicholas Bacon, the elder half-brother of Sir Francis Bacon. When Bacon's paternal grandfather was given the chance to revive the family title of Lord Oxford by Queen Victoria, he refused for financial reasons. Bacon rarely discussed his illustrious roots, preferring to portray himself as an outcast destined to carve his own path in the world. (from: Peppiatt, Michael (1996) Francis Bacon: Anatomy of an Enigma London: Weidenfeld & Nicolson)

When I started reading this I was thinking of the 16th century Sir Francis Bacon, the one who did a lot of autoexperimentation and invented the scientific method. It took a few paragraphs to realize that he was not alive during the 1920's. Now we're on the same page.
